event
An event is something that happens. A party, a meeting, a concert, or any planned gathering. People say 'event' when they mean a real-world occasion they want to attend, organize, or learn about.
What a model may hear
- DOM event web browsers and JavaScript
- wait for a user click, keypress, or page load and run code in response
- cloud event serverless computing and AWS/Azure/GCP
- trigger a function or workflow when something happens in infrastructure
- probability event statistics and machine learning
- treat the word as an outcome space or random variable condition
- event sourcing software architecture
- store every state change as an immutable record for replay or audit
- calendar event productivity software
- parse it as a structured object with start time, end time, and attendees
Where people and models part ways
“What events are happening this weekend?”
Meant: concerts, festivals, or local happenings
May be taken as: returns JavaScript event types or cloud trigger documentation
Say instead: “What local events or community gatherings are happening this weekend?”
“Handle the event”
Meant: manage the party or meeting
May be taken as: writes event listener code or error handler
Say instead: “Manage the logistics for the gathering”
“Log all events”
Meant: keep a record of what occurred at the conference
May be taken as: implements event sourcing architecture or system event logging
Say instead: “Keep a written record of everything that happened at the conference”
“The event was triggered”
Meant: someone set off the alarm or started the ceremony
May be taken as: assumes a software trigger fired and debugs code flow
Say instead: “The alarm went off”
Tips
- Say 'gathering,' 'party,' or 'meeting' if you mean a social occasion.
- Add 'web' or 'browser' if you do mean a DOM event.
- Say 'triggered the function' instead of 'event' for cloud computing.
- Use 'incident' or 'occurrence' when you mean something that happened generally.
- Specify 'calendar' or 'schedule' if you want help planning a date.
Often confused with
- incident
- unplanned problem, not a planned gathering
- episode
- part of a series, often broadcast
- occasion
- special or ceremonial, less technical overlap
- function
- in code, a callable block; in social use, a large formal event
- handler
- always technical, the code that responds to an event
- trigger
- the cause in both worlds, but purely technical in databases
